I picked up this book at the UNITY Journalists of Color Convention 2008 in Chicago. The title caught my eye….
Published in 2006 and written by 2 brilliant (and strongly opinionated) women, Natalie Hopkinson and Natalie Moore, Deconstructing Tyrone closely examines the role of the black male from a variety of perspectives. Shedding light on former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s acheivement as the youngest mayor of Detroit when elected at 31 and the struggles he faced when he was accused of corruption and scandal. This book also sheds light on gay black men, black men in the hip hop industry, raising young black men, and the relationship between women and their “baby daddys”.
This book is pretty raw, to the point and beautifully written. These women explore the myth surrounding black males in my generation in hopes that their message makes people think and even make them a little uncomfortable but most importantly…. prompts change.
